Action Items

Approval of Minutes of September 19, 2018 meeting

  • No changes, minutes adopted by unanimous consent.

Curriculum and General Education Committee Charter

  • On a motion by Greg Golling, seconded by Tori Furman, the updated membership to Curriculum and General Education Committee Charter was approved to move forward to Senate of the Whole.

Math Faculty Retirement Replacement

  • Math Department memo to Dr. Daniels providing justification for replacing retiring full-time mathematics professor was reviewed.
  • The retiring math faculty is Brian Jean.
  • Tony Thompson provided historical information on which past presidents have automatically replaced retiring faculty and which have not. Dr. Maloney did; Dr. Daniels does not.
  • Geoffrey Dyer reminded the group of the two resolution attempts by Senate on the subject of replacement of faculty positions.
  • On a motion by Tori Furman, second by Kelly Kulzer-Reyes, the recommendation to replace the retiring math faculty position was approved to move forward to Senate-of-the-Whole.

AB 705

  • Lori Sundgren attended the ASCCC AB 705 regional meeting.
  • Default placement measures should be followed unless there are data to support something different. The data must show that the students are highly unlikely to be successful in transfer level and that the placement practice has a higher throughput and leads to students being more successful in transfer level.
  • Academic Development Committee is looking into historical data. We have two years to collect and measure any new data.
  • Discussion about the transferability of courses:
    • compliance with AB 705 does not negatively impact the transfer degrees
    • the transfer level course pre-reqs still apply
    • to ensure transferability to the UC system the CORs need updating to state “math 1060 or the equivalent” to classes with math 1060 prereq such as Economics.
  • Guided self-placement is not simply a list of transfer level courses but a guide for students to take the most appropriate transfer level course for their pathway.
  • Vicki Jacobi is concerned about the sustainability of tutoring and SIs as they are currently being funded with temporary Guided Pathways funding.
  • When asked in Senate if an AB 705 subcommittee was needed, the response was no because it is already within the responsibility of Academic Development Committee.

Guided Pathways

  • The Guided Pathways oversight committee: Vicki Jacobi, Darcy Bogle, Joe’ll Chaidez, Windy Martinez, Jessica Grimes, Amar Abbott , and Paul Blake.
  • The oversight committee is looking at dividing the 14 elements among the team members to get an idea of what work is already being done. Then they will begin to track the progress.
  • Juana Escobedo mentioned the work of the general counselors on backwards mapping and creating two-year plan templates but when asked for the time to work on the project, the counselors were met with pushback from the Dean of Student Success. Juana asked, How do counselors gain support to work on Guided Pathways projects? Vicki Jacobi’s recommendation was to document the request and the response, provide the information/evidence to the Guided Pathways oversight Committee.
    • Juana Escobedo clarified that the counselors asked for time during their work-hours, not overload.
    • Tony Thompson said the expectation is that depending on the need and time of year, that we work more than 35 hours a week.
  • Right now the Guided Pathways oversight committee is building a structure.
