Approval of October 2, 2017 Senate Minutes

  • No corrections, minutes approved.

Commentary on Electronic Committee Updates

  • Reminder of the Brown Act requirements for all sub-committees of the Academic Senate.

ASCCC Fall Plenary Highlights – Jacobi & Dyer

  • Topics included professional development, guided pathways, OER and reduce cost textbooks, CTE and strong workforce.
  • Encouraged not to redesign curriculum with the passing of AB705, but to wait for guidance from the taskforce at the Chancellor’s Office.
  • Moorpark College has a model for guided self-placement.

AB 705 Update – Jacobi

  • Use high school performance indicators to place in math/English or other forms of multiple measures, whatever places the highest.
  • High school transcript is not required, the student can self report.
  • Common assessment was unable to validate and the Accuplacer is not valid therefore may not be on the Chancellor’s office approved list.
  • Spring 2018 term continue status quo, counselors will continue to use multiple measures. There should be guidance for implementation from the Chancellor’s office task force by fall 2018.
  • Still offer remediation, the students now have to be able to reach transfer level within one year.
  • Start collecting placement data.
  • Counselors will begin seeing new fall 2018 in-coming high school students as early as March and typically begin outreach and assessment efforts as early as January.

Criteria for Ranking New Faculty Position Requests

  • The Division Chairs revised the criteria for ranking of new faculty position requests using the same criteria with added definitions.
  • The criteria includes a narrative section to show impact on major/program with data from program review.
  • Nothing in the criteria addresses planned expansion and programs to be developed. Program review is for programs already in place not future planning. Still, trends could be included in the narrative. Also, the impact on existing programs such as overload and adjunct availability might not be strong enough indicators; we may want to offer more but cannot. All can be included in the narrative.
  • There is an issue as to where new programs start; there isn’t a clear answer.
  • Curriculum committee is currently looking at the process for program development, program viability, program revitalization, and program discontinuance.
  • The faculty will rank using the criteria using the definitions. It is not ranked/weighted.
  • On a motion by Tori Furman, seconded by Kamala Carlson, opposed by Jennifer Altenhofel, abstained by Tina Mendoza and Michelle Oja, the criteria for ranking new faculty position requests with added definitions to be used during January in-service was approved.

Integrated Plan – Primavera Arvizu

  • Integrate the goals of SSSP, BSI, and Equity to eliminate duplication and maximize resources.
  • The team met and came up with the five goals and the activities the support the goals and course completion.
  • The goals look at comprehensive education plans as a component of for all three programs supported by tutoring, AVID, increase transfer rates and CTE certificates. The goals look at closing achievement gaps and serving disproportionately impacted groups such as veterans. Professional development is also included.
  • The website will have an equity page and the Equity Executive Summary will be posted and linked to the plan.
  • All goals will be tracked, along with the activities and the funding associated with each activity.
  • The Promise Program cohort and Completion Coach data will be available after this first term, fall 2017, is completed.
  • On a motion by Diane Jones, seconded by Tori Furman, the Integrated Plan was approved.

Guided Pathways Self-Assessment – Primavera Arvizu

  • Guided pathways seem to be attached with most other funding.
  • The Chancellor’s office wants colleges to participate in the guided pathways and the four pillars.
  • What is required of guided pathways?
    • Attend workshop
    • Complete the Self-Assessment Tool
    • Create a five year plan
  • There are 14 key elements in the Guided Pathways Self-Assessment.
  • It is important to be honest as to the college’s accomplishments and challenges.
  • The narrative and five-year plan are still a work in progress.
  • How a college scores on the Self-Assessment is not aligned with funding.
  • If there is feedback, talk to the faculty on the team: Vicki Jacobi, Terry Smith, Dan Hall, Lori Sundgren, Sharyn Eveland, and a counselor (the counselors rotate based on availability).
  • On a motion by Ruby Payne, seconded by Sharyn Eveland, abstained by Paul Blake, Vicki Jacobi, and Bill Devine, the Guided Pathways Self-Assessment was approved.
