Present: Sharyn Eveland (President), Vicki Jacobi (Vice President), Geoffrey Dyer (Immediate Past President), Bill Devine, Jennifer Altenhofel, Joe’ll Chaidez, Kanoe Bandy, Lori Travis, Greg Golling

Call to Order

Sharyn Eveland Called the Meeting to order at 10:10am.

Public Commentary

None.

Approval of the Minutes

  1. Approval April 24, 2021 Minutes—On a motion by Jenifer Altenhofel,  seconded by Bill Devine,  the minutes  of the  April 24, 2021 meeting were  approved with no dissenting votes. Joe’ll Chaidez abstained.

Welcome

Welcome new representatives – The ASC welcomed new Learning Support Division Representative Joe’ll Chaidez.

Informational Items:

  1. Brown Act Training Friday Aug 20 at 1:10pm—Sharyn Eveland reported that representatives from the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges will be giving a Brown Act training on Friday, August 20, at 1:10pm and said that all members of Academic Senate or Academic Senate subcommittees should plan to attend.
  2. Professional Development/Training/Orientation for Committee Members—Sharyn Eveland reported that committees have expressed a desire for training and orientation to serve on their committees.
  3. Training for Academic Senate Standing Committee Chairs—Sharyn Eveland stated that she would like to develop a training specific to Academic Senate standing committee chairs. Discussions about committee assignments took place. Eveland addressed questions and reviewed the process for committee assignments.

Updates:

  1. ACCJC Site-visit – Virtual, Sept 27-30 (3 minutes)—Eveland reported that the upcoming site visit will be virtual and that faculty will receive lists of committees and individuals that the visiting team will want to talk to.

Old Business: Assignment of Responsibility for Development and/or Recommendation to Senate of the Whole for Action

New Business: Assignment of Responsibility for Development and/or Recommendation to Senate of the Whole

  1. AP 5530 Student Rights and Grievances revision—Eveland reported that the newly-updated AP 5530 has been difficult to understand and that the Academic Senate has been asked to refine it to make it clearer. She summarized changes to a planned revision which would break grievances into appropriate categories and allow a reasonable timeline. No action was taken.
  1. Academic Senate 2021-2022 Goals —Eveland proposed the following goals:
  • Increasing and promoting leadership development of faculty members and roles associated with 10+1 areas
  • Ensuring focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Improving partnership with local K – 12 feeder schools
  • Developing collaborative relationship with associated student organization to include student representation on all appropriate Academic Senate Standing Committees

The Academic Senate Council discussed the relationship between the goals and the 10+1 and how they related to broader college planning efforts. After a motion by Bill Devine, seconded by Joe’ll Chaidez, the ASC unanimously voted to forward the Academic Senate 2021-2023 Goals to the Senate-of-the-Whole for their consideration.

Kanoe Bandy moved to adjourn. Jennifer Altenhofel seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 11:00am.
