Approval of Minutes of September 15, 2017 Meeting

Minutes are approved by consensus with no changes.

Vicki updated the Committee of the changes in agenda structure. Because SLO/ASC is a subcommittee of the Academic Senate of the Whole, the format of the agenda and minutes should follow the rules and guidelines of the Brown Act.

Communication ISLO Data
The committee discussed the challenges of assessing the Communication ISLO. A recommendation was made to break the ISLO in to two parts; oral and written. It was also suggested that there be multiple ways to assess the one broad SLO. The committee discussed the problem of plagiarism and how to address it.
Action: The discussion will be taken to the Academic Senate to formulate strategies.

Global Awareness ISLO
Sharyn Eveland presented a session during inservice focusing on the Global Awareness ISLO. This session was not well attended so Vicki would like to have another session during spring inservice. During the spring inservice session, Vicki hopes to identify the classes that should assess the ISLO. It was suggested that the assessment be assigned to specific classes, perhaps Area E of the General Education/Lifelong Learning and Self-development as well as the Social Behavioral classes.
Action: Vicki will talk to Michelle Oja to identify which Social Science courses will assess Global Awareness.

 Critical Thinking ISLO Assessment Plan

The Critical Thinking ISLO will be assessed this semester. Vicki listed out all of the courses that should be assessing this ISLO. The committee discussed several strategies to assess the Critical Thinking ISLO.  The suggestion was made to break up the ISLO into two separate SLOs and embed them into the 1500 and 2000 level courses.

Action: There are two options to facilitate the assessment of the Critical Thinking ISLO. The first is to check CSLOs for Critical Thinking elements and ensure that the mapping in eLumen is correct. The second option is to assign the assessment directly to courses using a generic rubric. This can be done for adjuncts so that they do not have to set up the assessment in eLumen.

Spring Inservice
Vicki suggested that the members of the SLO/ASC team facilitate sessions during SLO Day. The goal is to identify common issues in the classroom regarding SLOs and develop tools for students.

Next Meeting: November 17, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center Conference Room
