Approval of Minutes of October 20, 2017 Meeting
Minutes are approved by consensus with no changes.
Vicki welcomed members and explained why many people were absent due to field trips
and other events.
Communication ISLO – Review of proposed changes
Vicki reviewed a change in the ISLO for Communication. The ISLO has been divided into
two subheadings of Written Communication and Oral Communication. Using the VALUE rubric,
the criteria was reviewed in order to establish an agreed rubric with criteria for
each. Courses that primarily use written work to assess the student will be assigned
the Written Communication ISLO whereas courses that use oral presentations in their
assessments of student learning will be assigned the Oral Communication ISLO. In courses
where both methods may be used, faculty can elect to add the Written Communication
ISLO. We also reviewed the GE SLO for Communication and Analytical Thinking as part
of the ISLOs for Communication and Critical Thinking (that will be assessed this year).
Action: There was also a discussion about the proposed Plagiarism SLO. It was agreed
that during spring in service, there would be a session to discuss this as a possible
criteria for both Written and Oral Communication ISLOs.
January Inservice – Structure of SLO Day
There was a discussion of which sessions to have during the spring in service. Some
ideas are:
• Allowing time for faculty to enter fall assessment data into eLumen
• Session on the Computation ISLO
• Session for Student Services
Afternoon sessions should be mandatory for all full time faculty to continue mapping
SLOs and courses so that a predictable two-year SLO assessment schedule can be developed.
Action: It was agreed that the committee would use the December 15th meeting as a
mock trial of the mapping session.
Critical Thinking ISLO – Attached to all 2000 level courses in eLumen
The Critical Thinking ISLO is mapped to all course SLOs written for 2000 level courses.
This will allow for reporting and automatic assessment without faculty direct assessment.
Next Meeting: December 15, 2017 from 11:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center Conference Room unless otherwise notified.
