ACCESSIBILTY OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
Friday, March 23, 2018
Cafeteria Conference Room
10:10 am – 11:00 am

MEMBERS PRESENT: Amar Abbott, Daniel Hall, Jason Zsiba, Terri Smith, Vick Jacobi, Kayla Meyer-Denver, Janis Mendenhall, Andrew Prestage and Melissa Blanco (Recorder)

  1. WELCOME
    1. Amar welcomed the members and thanked everyone for attending.
  2. CHARTER
    1. Amar stated the charter for the committee was updates with the recommended changes from the last meeting.
    2. Amar is working on getting a representative from the Facilities Committee.
    3. The committee will review the charter annually.
  3. ORDERING ACCESSIBLE TEXTBOOKS
    1. Amar suggested creating a procedure or process for faculty to ordering textbooks and automatically ordering accessible textbooks.
    2. This process needs to be developed with the VP in charge.
    3. Vicki suggested a professional development training for faculty in how to order textbooks and making sure they have accessible textbook versions as well.
    4. The VP of Instruction should be reviewing the textbook selections by faculty before approving the purchases.
    5. The District has the responsibility to document the process to show efforts of being ADA compliant in this area and all areas.
    6. It was stated OERs (open ed. resources) are accessible in electronic format (PDFs).
  4. ACCESSIBLE SOFTWARE DEMONSTRATION
    1. • Jason will provide a demonstration of the Monsido services at the April 27th meeting.
    2. Jason briefly demonstrated the evaluation tool the Chancellor’s Office has for checking websites for accessibility.
    3. The tool scans the website and provides directions to areas with errors and warnings.
    4. This tool is basic and only handles easier to spot areas where attention may be needed to provide or improve accessibility.
    5. Jason stated he would be assisting WESTEC with the website for accessibility issues. It has not been updated since 1997.
    6. It was also noted that the faculty websites need to be accessible and uniform with the District’s website. Jason stated the faculty websites were not a part of the TC website revamp and were left alone. This was a PIC and Darcy, VP at the time, decision.
  5. 504/508 ACCESSIBLE WEBINAR FROM PAPERCLIP
    1. Amar stated there would be a webinar in Room 311 (Library) on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at 11am-12:30pm on how to avoid mistakes and ensure ADA compliance. All committee members are invited.
  6. OTHER
    1. Janis Mendenhall briefly discussed an audit and findings that was conducted on three schools.
    2. Amar will send this document to members electronically for their review and information.
    3. It was also stated “accessibility” also needs to be integrated or addressed in the IT Masterplan regarding alternate media/resources used in classrooms, etc.
