Shelley Getty

Shelley Getty is Professor of Mathematics at Taft College. She attended Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Math Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Math. Soon after, she began teaching math at Shafter High School. While teaching, she completed her Master of Arts degree in Teaching Math from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB).

She began teaching at Taft College in 2008. One of the things she loves about Taft College is the people. “We are here for the students,” says Getty. “This is a place to belong and connect with others, while reaching your educational goals. That is why I have also been the advisor for the InterVarsity club since 2015.”

Math is a subject Getty really loves! However, that doesn’t mean it came naturally or quickly for her. She practiced long and hard to pass timed math facts tests in school. “It may have been after my seventh-grade teacher told my mom that I ‘was doing really well—for a girl’ that a fire was lit in me,” she notes. “I was going to show him how well a girl could do. That drive stuck with me through school.”

Outside of teaching, Getty’s life is focused on being a wife to a pastor and mother to two amazing kids. She enjoys playing the piano and flute, crocheting, crafting, and cheering on her kids and husband in all they do.
