Exposure Control


NOTICE on BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN

Dental Health Care Workers are exposed to bloodborne pathogens when treating patients.  Patients may also be exposed to pathogens during dental hygiene procedures.  The TCDH program follows OSHA/CDC requirements for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing equipment and work spaces including wearing personal protective equipment during treatment procedures.

ENGINEERING AND WORK PRACTICE CONTROLS

Engineering and work practice controls used to prevent or minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens:

  • Heat (steam under pressure) sterilizers
  • Chemical disinfectants
  • Instrument washers
  • Sharps disposal containers
  • Ultrasonic cleaners
  • High-volume evacuation systems
  • Needle recapping devices

NOTICE:  COVID-19 Engineering Controls

The Taft College Dental Hygiene Program has implemented additional infection control processes based on Guidelines, from CDC, OSHA, ADA, and the CA. Department of Public Health.  Additional processes include yet are not limited to:

  • Required masks/face coverings
  • Use of face shields during treatment procedures
  • Elimination/reduction of aerosol producing equipment
  • Limited appointments
  • Air Purification System
