ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

3:00 COUNSELING CONFERENCE ROOM (moved to S-11)

Present: Lori Sundgren, Dr. Windy Martinez, Joe’ll Chaidez, Kamala Carlson, Danielle Kerr, Janis Mendenhall, Diane Jones, Kent Miller, Celina Aldaco

Absent: Stacey Falgout

  1. Approve August minutes
    • August minutes were approved by Joe’ll and seconded by Diane.
  1. Review and evaluate ADC charter as per charter language
    • Committee reviewed the charter, as per language. No changes, etc. at this time.
  1. Basic Skills Action Plan
    • Lori questioned whether the Basic Skills Action Plan is still relevant with all of the changes in basic skills statewide. She noted that it has been omitted from being a choice within the Annual Program Review. Additional question is to how did it come about, in response to what? Committee decided to leave it for now and focus on program review.
  1. Basic Skills Budget
    • Lori brought a breakdown of the basic skills budget. She explained that there is significantly less money than originally anticipated. Chart/ table showed that most of this money goes to classified salaries and benefits, student tutors, and front desk staff (students and classified extra duty).
  1. How the Learning Center is using Guided Pathways to assist basic skills students taking transfer level courses
  2. Basic Skills Annual Program Review
  3. Future of the Academic Development Committee
  4. Late addition to the agenda. Discussion occurred after approval of the minutes. Joe’ll brought up ESL 900. Idea is to see about putting it on the schedule for spring and increase marketing. Joe’ll has spoken with, or will speak with Kelly. He will also speak with adult ed and create a flyer as well. Windy mentioned that Berkeley City College has had similar struggles with filling their ESL courses.
