Taft College Faculty Collective Bargaining Committee (TCFCBC) Update

SB 1379 “Part-time, temporary employees re-hire rights”

President Jones stated a subcommittee was formed consisting of Joe’ll Chaidez, Jessica Grimes, Greg Golling, Diane Jones, Robert Meteau, Primavera Arvizu, Mark Williams and John Kopp. After much research, and two meetings, faculty in the last TCFCBC meeting presented draft language. The item was sent back to the subcommittee to allow Admin a third opportunity to present language. Diane will send the current draft to the membership.

Face-to-face teaching at correctional facilities

President Jones stated that this issue is ongoing. Admin brought some responses to our questions in the last meeting. Training details, requirements, and compensation are still being discussed. A lengthy discussion ensued pertaining to safety, right of assignment not applying unless stated in job description, emergency/hostage situations, mileage compensation, etc. A subcommittee has been established in TCFCBC consisting of Diane Jones, Ruby Payne and Mark Williams.

AB 2393 “Parental Leave”

President Jones stated this issue will go to TCFCBC. AB 2393 went into effect January 1, 2017, and the district has already honored its provisions. We need to get language codified. Both faculty and Administration have sent this out for legal opinions.

Scholarship Committee

President Jones asked if Tori Furman, Juana Rangel-Escobedo, Kelly Kulzer and Mike Jiles were willing to serve on this committee again this year. All agreed to serve. A motion was presented by Ruby Payne, and seconded by Sharyn Eveland to authorize $4000 in scholarship funds. The motion was unanimously approved. Gary Graupman and Eric Bérubé have announced their retirements and each have selected a donation to the scholarship program as their gift from the Association. Sharyn Eveland made a motion to donate $300 per retiree toward the local scholarship program. Vicki Jacobi seconded and the motion was unanimously approved.

Other

President Jones congratulated Brian Jean and other faculty performers, Jessica Grimes, Steve Lytle, Julian Martinez, and Shelley Getty, on the success of the performers circle. Brian Jean stated the next circle showcases students. Diane congratulated Jennifer Altenhofel for being featured in a recent California Educator article. The association received a thank you card for donating $500 to the Promise Program. Diane reminded members of the right to request representation in any meeting with supervisors. She also encouraged clear note taking that records what each party will do following the meeting. Tony Thompson asked the association to support the Hall of Fame Committee, and reminded everyone this is a College wide Hall of Fame.

Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 12:48 pm.
